Welcome to McLotto! Thank you so much for reading. Normally I will send this out on Mondays, but consider this an early edition of the newsletter.
Last week I was looking through furniture auctions when I found this beautiful vanity from Catalog Sale, an incredible auction house based in New York with the most wonderful selection of items. (If you’re looking for a true masterclass in Live Auctioneers I can’t recommend Sami Reiss’s newsletter Snake Auction enough.)
This vanity is so beautiful. It’s the kind of piece where as soon as I saw it I began imagining my life with it. Folding sweaters to put in the sliding glass doors beneath it, a few beautiful old art deco-style perfume bottles on the ledge, and all the tiny little knick knacks you accumulate to create small shrines around your house.
It reminds me of those old movies where a beautiful, crazed woman storms into her house after a late-night quarrel with her lover, sets her earrings down on it, and then collapses onto a wonderful chaise lounge, overwhelmed by life and the beauty and pain of it all. It’s the kind of piece that makes you enjoy the small pleasures of waking up and getting dressed. Seasonal depression begone!!! Find energy in the rituals of life!!!
It ended up selling for $500, and while I was sad I missed out on it I started seeing them everywhere I looked on furniture sites. (If you really want to go crazy there’s this Luigi Massoni one on FB Marketplace and a similar one that’s cheaper than other sites I’ve seen selling them.) Other than that, here are a few items I saw this week that look great.
QUICK PIECES FOR SALE IN NYC/NJ AREA
This wonderful stool on Craigslist for $150 that reminds me of some of the beautiful, spindly things Oculus London sells, or this wacko great table from Hollie Bowden
A nice Alvar Aalto side table ($800) that would look great in any tiny NYC apartment
I love a simple white couch! Like this Ethan Allen one for $800. I like having simple, big pieces of furniture to balance out all the accent pieces I have in my room. Dress it up with a blanket! Add some crazy art around it!
Someone please buy these chairs — 500$ for two! Such a steal and they look so cool and comfortable.
Two crazy chrome lamps — one for $118 and the other for $140, get it to go with this chrome coffee table for $180
A wonderful Knoll (can’t verify authenticity) credenza for $1250
NOT IN NYC BUT STILL INSANE: An expensive but beautiful Joe Colombo, 'Combi Center' shelving unit (starting at $1,588) that makes me so happy.
Thanks so much for reading <3
